Travel insurance should be a number one priority for skiers heading to pistes this winter, it has been claimed.
Brits planning winter holidays are being urged not to let financial concerns prompt them into cutting back on travel insurance cover. According to esure, consumers are increasingly looking for ways to make their trips more affordable and travel insurance is often a victim of their cost cutting.
Research carried out by the insurer reveals that 1.8 million Brits are planning to escape the gloomy climate in the UK and head to the pistes this winter, with cheaper ski resorts such as Poland proving popular.
However, it also shows that almost a fifth of winter holidaymakers would forgo travel insurance cover to save on the overall cost of their winter sports trip, which esure points out could prove to be a false economy.
"Any winter sports holiday - no matter how long the trip or how close to home - comes with a certain element of risk," said Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at the firm. "It's crucial to ensure you're fully covered if you have an accident on the slopes."
And he added that the growing popularity of less well-established ski resorts - such as those in Poland - make travel insurance even more of a necessity, since medical facilities and slope rescue services may not match up to those available in bigger, more expensive resorts.
According to the personal injury specialist Paul Rooney Partnership, winter sports accidents account for one-third of all travel insurance claims.
