A significant number of people heading abroad for skiing holidays wrongly believe that their European Health Insurance Card will completely cover them if they have an accident.
Ski enthusiasts going abroad this winter have been told that they should take out travel insurance in addition to their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Research by insurer esure found that five percent of skiers without insurance, amounting to roughly 20,000 people, mistakenly think that the EHIC - formerly known as the E111 - will cover all their health costs. However, the firm warned that without travel insurance, the injured holidaymakers could end up paying thousands of pounds for services such as helicopter evacuation and repatriation.
While many experienced skiers may feel that they are unlikely to be involved in an accident, figures have shown that they are extremely common. Italian authorities have had to deal with more than 1,000 injuries this winter alone, with more than 100 people being fined for dangerous behaviour on the slopes. Last season, 34 people died in skiing accidents in Austria, while more than 50,000 required hospital treatment.
"No matter what your level of competency on the slopes, accidents do happen and huge medical bills can easily rack up," said Mike Pickard, esure head of travel insurance. "It's crucial to ensure you're fully covered with quality insurance that includes specific winter sports cover."
The firm advised that people who are buying travel insurance should read the small print, as sports cover is often an optional extra.
