What you need to know about choosing motorbike insurance.

Motorbike insurance is not only a legal requirement, but will also protect you financially if the unforeseen should occur. The majority of motorbike insurance providers are able to tailor policies to suit the usage, type and make of your motorcycle so you only pay for the cover you really need.

Different insurance policies are usually offered for off road bikes, sports bikes, classic bikes and bikes used for domestic and business purposes, with 3 levels of cover available. 3rd party motorbike insurance is the most basic level of cover and will simply cover liability and damage to other's property. 3rd party, fire and theft is a slightly more comprehensive level of cover and will pay out for repair or replacement if a bike is damaged by fire or stolen, as well as for 3rd party claims. Fully comprehensive is the highest level of motorbike insurance available and will cover theft, fire, 3rd party damage as well as any repairs needed on the bike itself. Many insurers will include additional benefits such as breakdown cover when fully comprehensive insurance is taken.

Unless you have any previous car-related convictions, your driving history and claims on your car insurance will not be taken into consideration when insurers calculate your motorbike premium. However, this also means that car insurance no claims discounts are not transferable.

It is possible to build a no claims discount on a motorbike insurance policy and many other discounts are often available. For instance, most insurers offer limited mileage discounts as well as discounts for advanced security measures and indoor storage. Accidental damage to helmets and leathers is not usually included in standard motorbike insurance policies; however this is usually available as an add-on.

If you have more than one motorbike it is worth checking whether an insurer provides multi-bike policies as these often help save on the overall cost of the premium. By obtaining several motorbike insurance quotes you should be able to find a level of cover that suits both your motorbike and the way in which you use it.
