New Program 'Cuts Out Drunk Emailing'

People who send out embarrassing messages when under the influence of alcohol might be interested in a new service developed by a Google employee.

Google has developed an innovative new product to tackle one of the minor curses of the broadband-enabled world - drunk emailing.

Known as Mail Goggles, the electronic assistant helps to block out these embarrassing missives by asking the emailer a few maths questions before allowing the message to be sent. Developers hope that the sozzled writer will therefore be unable to send their email - and, potentially, save on relationship troubles as a consequence!

Writing on his blog Jon Perlow, Google employee and inventor of Mail Goggles, explained what gave him the idea for the system.

"Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send," he admitted. "Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late-night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together."

He added that the program determines whether or not "you're really sure you want to send that late-night Friday email … what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple maths problems after you click send to verify you're in the right state of mind?".

How about something actually useful - like a prompt that says:

"Looks like you've mentioned an attachment in your message but you haven't attached any files, send the email anyway?"
