Sainsbury's Advises Foreign Car Insurance Checks
Britons planning to drive abroad this summer must be sure to check that they are covered by their car insurance policies, Sainsbury's Bank said today.
The warning comes following new research from the car insurance provider, which found that 17 per cent of drivers are set to take their vehicles overseas over the next 12 months. Sainsbury's Bank advised that, unless this group consults with their insurer before they begin their trip, they could unwittingly travel without realising that their comprehensive cover has diminished to third party for overseas trips.
This means that, should they become involved in an accident while abroad, they could be forced to pay out for repair costs for their own vehicle.
The problem is made more acute by the long distances which many of the car-owning Britons are aiming to travel. Sainsbury's Bank found that around 48 per cent of those going outside the UK would be driving for more than 1,000 miles abroad.
Joanne Mallon at the car insurance provider commented: "When going on holiday, most people will remember to take travel insurance but we are concerned that some motorists are overlooking the need to ensure that their car journey is fully covered. Having an accident anywhere is bad enough but when abroad it can be compounded by a lack of local knowledge, to then find that the other party's damage is covered but not your own, is surely a blow worth avoiding."
