Around 4,000 caravans are stolen each year, the AA claimed today.
Caravan thefts are a growing problem in the UK, a leading insurance provider said today.
According to caravan insurance provider the AA, around 4,000 mobile homes go missing in the UK each year. What's more, big regional variations were also detected in the firm's caravan research: in the area bordered by Leicester, Coventry, Birmingham and Nottingham, the theft rate was found to be ten per cent higher than the national average.
Indeed, AA has dubbed the region the "Caravan Bermuda Triangle", so high is its theft rate. "The triangle of trouble is drawn along the popular motorway network of the M6, M42 and M1 which provide quick getaway routes for thieves," head of AA Caravan Insurance Simon Douglas explained.
The expert added: "Caravanning is increasing in popularity and we're seeing more caravans being stolen to order, especially larger, luxury twin-axle models."
In order to fight the thieves, the AA recommended that caravan owners install wheel clamps, chassis locks and hitch locks on their vehicles, as well as fitting it with an electronic tracking device if it is particularly valuable. Choosing a safe site in which to store the caravan over the winter, especially one operated by the Caravan Storage Site Owners' Association, was also advised by the firm.
