Motorbike riders would stand to benefit from extra safety courses, a car insurance provider has claimed.

Holders of motorcycle insurance should take an awareness course in order to save money on premiums, the AA has advised.

These classes aim to teach motorcyclists about the particular risks facing them on the road; as well as providing safety tips, they also provide evidence to insurance providers that the driver is less likely to cause an accident.

Latest government statistics show that there are around 1.22 million licensed motorcycles in the UK. Over the past year, 67 per cent of the 66,363 men who took motorcycle tests passed them and gained their license. Among women, this figure was 10,630 with 54 per cent passing.

The Department for Transport also found that 16,360 motorcyclists were injured on the road for the last year's results available. 16 to 34-year-olds were found to be those most at risk of getting hurt.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager at AA Insurance, commented: "You can reduce the risk of having an accident by taking a motorcycle awareness course and taking such courses can reduce your insurance premiums.

"A bit of caution about the dangers of motorcycling is no bad thing because it enhances your awareness on the road and it will help you to be a little more alert to the fact that you might not be seen immediately by other vehicles."
