Moscow-bound Football Fans Warned of Insurance Concerns

Fans heading for the Champions League final must make sure they are adequately insured, a cover provider has said.

Football fans planning a trip to Moscow in order to watch the UEFA Champions League final should make sure that they are fully insured, Direct Line has warned.

The travel insurance provider also issued a reminder today that the EHIC, previously known as the E111, does not cover journeys to Russia. This can mean that Britons caught up in an accident while in Moscow might be left out of pocket through expensive medical bills.

Over 40,000 fans from the UK are anticipated to visit the Russian capital for the match later this month, which will see Chelsea take on Manchester United.

Chris Price, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, commented: "While it is easy to get excited about the first ever all-English final, fans should prepare adequately for an overseas trip. They should ensure they have the right travel insurance in place to cover them for incidents which may occur while away including medical emergencies, loss of passports, legal assistance and trip cancellation which can be very costly and inconvenient at the best of times."

He added: "With air ambulance evacuations costing up to £25,000, a serious accident or injury can result in financial disaster for fans without insurance."

The travel insurance provider also issued a series of "top tips" on safety for fans. Booking accommodation before leaving, refraining from drinking too much alcohol and keeping passports in easy reach at all times all came highly recommended from the firm.
