Broadband Users 'Don't Know Their Own Bandwidth Limits'

Use of popular video sites are leading to many customers paying extra for their broadband, it has been suggested.

Many consumers in the UK are paying too much for their broadband, a new study has revealed.

According to internet service provider PlusNet, customers are often confused about how much bandwidth they require for their connection.

Research from pollsters YouGov conducted on PlusNet's behalf showed that 27 per cent of UK internet users do not know their bandwidth allowance - meaning that they can often face extra charges from their provider if they exceed the limit.

The recent growth in popularity of bandwidth-hungry video sites such as YouTube and the BBC's iPlayer has also exacerbated the issue.

In order to tackle this problem, the provider has launched its own bandwidth calculator, allowing customers to work out which activities contribute to the heaviest usage.

Neil Armstrong, PlusNet's products and marketing director, commented: "There are plenty of customers out there who could be paying too much for their broadband and this calculator helps them, by making them more aware."
