Careful on the Roads Today
Take care when you’re out and about on the roads today as, according to car insurance provider Admiral, it’s the most dangerous day of the year to drive.
In a mass analysis of the 1.8million claims they’ve received over the past 15 years they discovered that more accidents happen on the 18th January than at any other time of the year. What’s more, as Friday was found to be the most ‘dangerous’ day of the week to travel on the roads, the fact that they fall together spells double the trouble for UK motorists.
Sue Longthorn, managing director of Admiral car insurance commented: “It's not surprising to see that the worst day of the week for accidents is a Friday as people are tired after a long week at work and can easily get caught up thinking about their weekend plans instead of the road ahead. “
She speculated: "In terms of the January 18th being dangerous, it's difficult to say for certain why this is, but it could be that people have a lot on their mind as they haven't been paid for a while, the bills are coming in, it's dark, the weather's often foul and the fun of the festive period is a long and distant memory."
The survey found that statistically February 29th sees the fewest accidents with Christmas day and Boxing day being the safest days to drive after this.
Admiral also found that more claims are made on weekdays than weekends (most likely because of the greater volume of traffic on the road) and, rather unsurprisingly, that more incidents happen through the winter months with 9 of their 10 most dangerous days for driving falling between October and March.
