Landlines Guide

We explain how you can make big savings on UK landline calls.

Many people are signed up to a UK landline call tariff which is unsuitable for their needs and provides benefits and features they simply don't use. By switching to a call plan that fits the way you use your landline phone, you should be able to significantly cut the cost of your phone bill.

'Direct Access' is the name used to describe the few phone companies who actually provide the physical phone line connection into your home, BT and cable companies can be included in this description. New legislation means that BT has to offer other phone companies the option to rent its lines directly (known as wholesale line rental).

In the past, if you chose an alternative landline provider, you either had to dial a prefix number each time you made a call or arrange for your calls to be routed across the alternative provider's network. This meant that although your calls were billed from a new provider, you still had to pay a separate line rental bill to BT. Now if you choose an alternative landline provider you will simply receive a single, all inclusive bill.

The introduction of wholesale line rental has revolutionised the UK landline call market, meaning it is now more competitive than ever before. There is currently a huge variety of landline call providers, each offering unique call plans designed to suit the specific needs of different users. This means that whether you frequently call abroad or only ever make landline calls on the weekend, there will be a call plan which can save you money.

The best way to go about choosing a call plan is firstly to establish the way in which you and the people you live with use your landline phone. The easiest way to do this is by looking at your phone bills from the last few months. These should detail whether you mostly make local or national calls, whether you make expensive international calls or calls to mobiles. After you have an idea of your pattern of landline usage, you can then begin to compare different landline price plans.

By matching a landline call plan to the way in which you use your landline phone to make calls, you should be able to save yourself a significant amount of money in your household bills.
