There are such a huge variety of broadband packages available that it can be difficult enough to establish the differences between the offerings from different ISPs (internet service providers) let alone decide which the right package is for you. Unfortunately there is no simple answer; whether a broadband package proves to be good value for money or not is ultimately down to the way you, and the people you live with, use the internet.

Most broadband packages are available on a pay monthly basis, with the cost determined by the connection speed, connection method, download allowance and extra features included.

ADSL is the most popular method of connecting to the internet as it provides broadband connection through your regular phone line in much the same way as dialup. However, whereas dialup transmits information along the same frequency range as that used for voice transmission, broadband operates on a higher range. It is this frequency alteration that enables your computer to remain constantly connected to the internet without causing any disruption to your phone calls.

Cable broadband is provided by cable TV companies and is becoming an increasingly popular option as the cable network spreads and becomes available to more of the country. Cable suppliers often offer broadband as part of a comprehensive entertainment package including cable TV channels and phone calls.

The broadband connection speed you select will have an affect on everything you do online, from opening web pages to interactive gaming. However, no matter which connection speed you choose, you can be confident that you will be provided with a super fast service that is anything from 10 to 100 times faster than dialup.

For the average user 1 or 2mpbs will more than likely suffice, whereas for those who use more advanced features or are planning to create a home network, a higher speed option is likely to be more economical.

The specified download allowance associated with each package refers to the amount information (or 'chunks of data') you are allowed to transfer each month; these limits typically range from 1Gb through to unlimited. Again, the way in which you use your computer will determine the limit that will provide you with the most value for money.
